Article #3 - About Current Accounts

So what is a current account?  A current account is likely to be the most common and simplest financial service offered in the banking world today.  Nearly everyone will already have or need a current account in order to survive in todays modern society.  The current account is no longer provided only by banks - other high street brands are also getting in on the act and it is now commonplace to be able to get current account services from supermarkets!

A current account provides a number of basic, but important services.  First and foremost it provides a secure location to keep your money.  Secondly, it provides access to your money, and thirdly, it allows you make secure direct debit or standing order money payments.

Although the current account is a relatively simple financial product, you do need to spend some time considering which current account best fits your needs.  There are many variations to choose from and all provide a range of features from which to benefit.

A current account is normally free to setup, but always check as a few still do make a charge or require an initial deposit to open the account.  Where you will undoubtedly be charged, is for the use of an overdraft facility.  An overdraft is a pre agreed facility that allows you to withdraw money beyond your account balance.  The overdraft facility is normally to a pre agreed limit.  If you go over this limit, then you will incur interest payments until the balance is repaid.  Some overdraft facilities are free when you stay within the agreed limit and others may charge.

There are a number of other features that you should consider before chosing your current account provider.

For example the availability of online banking.  This is proving a popular choice for internet savvy consumers.  This service is simple to use and allows you instant access to view your account balance, set up standing orders, make one-off payments or money transfers and a raft of other features.  This may be an important feature if you don’t want to go to the bank too often or call the customer services help desk.  It also means that if you are on holiday and have access to a PC then you also have access to your bank account!
